They give kids cameras to capture their homes along the border and have them send in their short stories to “creatively reflect upon the rich, cross-cultural human experiences within the US/Mexico borderland region.” As a Valley kid myself, lemme tell ya, there is A LOT to creatively reflect upon. My part of the border, the upper Rio Grande Valley area, is a place you don’t want to return to yet feel nostalgic for at the same time. It’s a complete mishmash of two cultures and one very geographically isolated region. It’s unlike any other. I don&amp;#8217;t feel comfortable posting long blocks of text, yet I quite enjoy the freedom to easily post pictures, links, or quotes that succinctly indicate how I feel on that day. Tumblr is aesthetically pleasing. This quality, however, also makes me suspicious of its trendiness. Its effortlessness makes me think that it&amp;#8217;s too easy to make yourself look cool. I haven&amp;#8217;t even figured out its purpose in the scheme of things&amp;#8230;is it a blog? An extension of facebook? Despite this crisis I am having, I will continue to use it because I am feeling out of the technological loop. I am still using myspace. Just kidding. But I only have a facebook, and that is beginning to seem a bit passé. I will continue to post things I like on here until I decide. And I will continue to use it as a blog where I post long-winded thoughts. So shoot me.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Thoughts I have: 1) I&amp;#8217;m really annoyed with Google&amp;#8212; what happened to your &amp;#8220;don&amp;#8217;t be evil&amp;#8221; slogan, huh?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;2) I am moving into a co-op. What are people that live in co-ops like?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;3) Cold-calling someone to sell a product is suspiciously like calling someone for an interview. I didn&amp;#8217;t do very well working at a call center and I&amp;#8217;m still fearful of calling people I don&amp;#8217;t know. I did, however, score a personal victory in picking up the phone and calling a local coffeeshop owner for an interview. No hour-long procrastination attempts (although I did start cleaning my toilet bowl), no distracting yoga techniques to get me to &amp;#8220;loosen up.&amp;#8221; I am proud. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now I am off to do some more cold-calling. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Random thought: I really want those stretchy plastic bracelets that make shapes. They’re living the life- boarding, surfing, and making it all look superbly cool. I have no idea how old they are or what their deal is but, as far as I can tell, they’re surfer/skater kids documenting their lives. I stumbled upon this while trying to find super 8 clips of people skateboarding (seemed summer-y). They seem to have some talent, though. I posted their roadtrip one ‘cause that one was enthralling and beautiful. Check out the other one they have posted with some guy boarding in the 70s caught on Super8. Side note: I feel slightly weird and voyeuristic looking at a stranger’s vacation photos…it makes me wonder…who do people intend things like this for? Their general circle of connections? Misha Ashton, who I believe works out of Eastern Oregon and LA, had all these sweet, vintage-y 35mm shots that looked like a 1970s dream world. She even made some of them into belt buckles, which thoroughly impressed me. The ferris wheel is one of her photos-dream world, no? Her shots from LA are equally ethereal. I’m going back today and I really want to talk to her and see where she gets her ideas from. According to her website, she never uses Photoshop or anything to alter her photos, just the film development process. &lt;/p&gt;
