  The Great Internship Debate

  For damn good reason the subject of unpaid internships has been a hot button issue as of late. I still don’t know my feelings on them, especially when I consider how many people are doing them post-grad. This could be some embarrassing display of my lack of confidence, but I tend to feel unqualified for career-oriented jobs and find myself still applying for internships. I’ve applied for a few this summer but I’m wondering whether I should ditch that idea, travel around, and find a job by fall.

  Paradise has relocated

  A photo exhibition showing at Okay Mountain here in Austin, Texas. I’ve never been to Galveston, so I had no idea about the prolonged damage Hurricane Ike caused. This collection of photos documents it beautifully. I would have liked to see a few shots of the island’s residents, however, to give me a better idea of the spirit of this apparently downtrodden, hopeful (?) place.

  Is there still hope for nature?

  According to a Reuters article (don’t know how I got there), Jacques, an “adult magazine” that features mostly silicone free women that are just naturally beautiful, is apparently successful. Really successful. Now, for some reason, this gives me lots of hope. I thought the online porn industry combined with other media evils had destroyed the thought of natural beauty. Turns out people (men?) still dig it. That’s good to know. While they sometimes seem a tad too hipster for my taste, I think I might love Jacques.

  Youthland Border Project

  This is an art project happening at Texas State, I believe, called Borderland Youth. They give kids cameras to capture their homes along the border and have them send in their short stories to “creatively reflect upon the rich, cross-cultural human experiences within the US/Mexico borderland region.” As a Valley kid myself, lemme tell ya, there is A LOT to creatively reflect upon. My part of the border, the upper Rio Grande Valley area, is a place you don’t want to return to yet feel nostalgic for at the same time. It’s a complete mishmash of two cultures and one very geographically isolated region. It’s unlike any other. I’m really glad someone is beginning to document this…

  Lynn Wyatt- one of the last great socialites?

  I had never heard of Lynn Wyatt until she was featured in some magazine (Texas Monthly?) as one of Texas’ top 5 women. I’m not a huge fan of socialites, especially the ones manufactured in the last few years, but she seems regal and old-breedish…plus she must have some crazy stories. I loved the mention of Liza Minelli doing a cabaret show for Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal. CRAZY FACT: Apparently I living in the same co-op that Farrah did when she was in school.
